M-Teach Thesis: Teaching and Learning Strategies: Developing Autonomous Critical Practitioners in Art and Design
Abstract

This dissertation presents the design and creation of a pilot research project. The project tests teaching and learning strategies for developing autonomy and critical thinking for art and design students on a BTEC Foundation Studies Diploma Level 3/4 course. By considering the relationship between developing autonomy and developing critical thinking it has been possible to develop a programme that facilitates the empowerment of students in determining their art and design practice with a view that this constitutes a form of lifelong learning. The strategies have been implemented and tested via the dissertation research then assessed with recommendations for the development of a year-long research equivalent.
